Femininity

I have some friends who say that I'm the girliest girl they've met. Others, not so much! What really makes femininity? Is it acting or do you feel it in your soul and it just comes out?

It is an interesting point to ponder for me these days. Some days I feel feminine, some days I just feel "blah!" which is also ok. I am beginning to think that some of it is indeed due to hormonal fluctuations, because I notice that the "blah" feelings tend to come towards the end of my estrogen cycling. But then that would simply be part of a reaction to something biological rather femininity, which I believe transcends that.

So what do you believe to be femininity?

You should really read Julia Serrano's book, Whipping Girl. She has a very pointed viewpoint about femininity, and how society devalues it. She also explains about oppositional sexism, which is the tendency for society to define feminine and masculine traits as being mutually exclusive, i.e. if one trait is masculine, it's opposite must be feminine. This is, of course, extremely limiting and mostly untrue.

As for me, I think being or feeling feminine means being in touch with your female spirit, which we all have inside us, men and women. Femininity is the natural outcome when you access that part of yourself.

It's very hard to say. I think it's a marriage of both natural personality traits and hormonal influence. Let's face it, when you reach the end of your hormone cycle, you certainly don't turn into a NASCAR-watching, beer drinking, car-fixing alpha male! You are the same beautiful, gorgeous, loving, sweet, very very female Colleeny. However, that aspect may become more blunted.

Another possibility is that femininity is influenced by energy level! When my levels are low I am much more tired and irritable. Being femminine takes a great deal more work than being "manly", to put it in the most stereotypical terms.

It takes more energy to sit up straight and cross your legs than it does to slouch and spread them. It takes more energy to be genial and engaging than it does to become absorbed in a video game or TV. It takes more energy to get up in the morning and prettify oneself to the Nth degree than it does to throw on Jeans and hold the makeup.

Either way, you ARE the most feminine- along with the most same beautiful, gorgeous, loving, sweet, admirable, and absolutely amazing- girl I know 365/6 days a year. =)
